Subtly Sweet: Coconut and Sesame Seed Macaroons

When one thinks of Chinese food, one usually doesn't think of sweet dishes and aside from fortune cookies (created in San Francisco), Chinese or Asian cookies are almost unheard of outside of Asia. This is truly unfortunate as Asian cookies are not only delicious, they are also a helluva lot more nutritious than the crap you buy in the supermarkets. Also, like most Asian dishes, they are simple to make and take very little time.

Macaroons have become one of the more popular cookies in the world. It should be noted, however, that there is a difference between a macaroon and a macaron. With this macaroon, we use coconut and sesame seeds. The ingredients are held together with beaten egg whites and flavored with a touch of almond extract. They are gluten-free and very low in calories and fat.
